Steps to Becoming an Esthetician

General EducationApril 18, 2020

Fortis Institute-Towson recently announced the addition of an Esthetics Skincare program to the campus’ course offerings. So, what do estheticians do? Below we have answered some of the most commonly asked questions.

What is an esthetician?

Estheticians are skincare specialists who are trained in the beautification of the human body through skin cleansing, depilation, facials, and the application of makeup.

How do I become an esthetician?

Individuals must complete an esthetician program that has been approved by the state in which they want to work. For the Fortis Institute-Towson campus, students must obtain 600 hours of esthetics training per the state of Maryland. Budding estheticians learn how to provide professional skin care, including facial massage, hair removal, application of advanced topicals, spa treatments and much more.

Do I need a license?

After completing the required training, most states will require you to get a license, which means passing written and practical exams. In Maryland, students are required to take the Esthetician Licensing Examination administered by the Maryland Board of Cosmetologists upon graduation.

The final step is to take the Certified Technology Specialist exam, which tests your skills knowledge to perform tasks without guidance or assistance.

Ready to jump in?

Graduates from the Fortis Institute-Towson program will demonstrate an advanced understanding of the structure, function and treatment of the skin and will qualify for entry-level employment as estheticians or facial specialists in a wide range of industries including travel, medical and spa.
